Early
Childhood Activities:
Calls From
Santa
- Receive a special "Call from Santa" for children
ages 3, 4, 5, & 6. The Downtown Belleville
Optimist, Westside Optimist, Belleville Jaycees and
Telephone Pioneers will be making calls in
December. Forms may be obtained from the Parks &
Recreation Office, City Hall or through issues in
the Belleville News Democrat.

Alphabet
Academy -
The
Belleville Parks & Recreation Department sponsors a
quality early childhood experience for your child,
socially, emotionally, physically, and
intellectually at the Nichols Community Center.
Children are involved in hands-on learning through
fine and large motor activities, dramatic play and
creative arts, science, math and
language experiences, cooking, and more. The
program provides a stimulating learning atmosphere
in large, well-equipped rooms and focuses on
age-appropriate development of social, emotional,
physical and intellectual skills.

Kiddie Camp
- Camp PeeWee is a summer Camp for children ages 3-5
years old during the month of June. It features
weekly themes and daily activities including arts
and crafts, story time, finger plays, songs, outdoor
games and supervised free play. A mid-morning snack
will be scheduled. Children will bring a sack lunch
to eat at noon. Camp PeeWee is held in the
"air-conditioned" facility at the Nichols Community
Center.

Kids in Action
& Tots in Motion
- These age appropriate programs allow children to
participate in a variety of activities including
sports, games, gymnastics, creative movement, while
acquiring better hand eye coordination, balance
agility, sports skills and self esteem.

Little Kickers Soccer - is a
non-competitive, co-recreational approach to
teaching safe soccer to pre-school age children.
Teams consist of a maximum of 9 players. Each
team will practice for the first 25 minutes and then
will bat and field against another team during the
last 20 minutes. All players will receive a
T-shirt and Safety Ball. This is a parent
participation program. Parents/Guardians will be
required to assist their child on the field.

Little Sluggers T-Ball - is a

- This is a hands-on arts and crafts class for the
independent active child. Paint, paste, cut, and
glue...we'll do it all. Children will sing songs
and listen to music while they create masterpieces.

- Join the NCC staff for an afternoon of fun,
friends and crafts. This program immediately
follows the Alphabet Academy sessions.

- Come learn tumbling basics at the Nichols
Community Center. This class will work on your

American Red
Cross Babysitting
- Participants will obtain the knowledge, skills,
and confidence to care for infants through school
aged children. Training will cover injury, illness,
prevention, basic childcare, decision-making and age
appropriate behavior. Participants will receive a
handbook and American Red Cross Certificate.

Camp
Quackers
- Camp Quackers, is an entertaining nine-week summer
day camp program, that takes full advantage of the
lush, green terrain of Bellevue Park. The historic
Stone Lodge is the headquarters for the camp.
The wide variety of activities scheduled for the
day-campers includes physical, educational and
social events, plus arts and craft project. Parents
and guardians can rest easy because child safety is
our primary concern.

Escape School
- The Nichols Community Center offers an important
community service program for any child that is able
to understand the material presented. Nationally
Certified Instructors will teach your children
techniques to be "smart, not scared" if ever in an
abduction situation. Parents are encouraged to
attend.

Catch and
Release: "Free" Fishing Derby
- The Belleville Parks & Recreation Department offer this
FREE event at the lake in Bellevue Park. This
Derby
is open to youngsters' 4-12 years of age with
participants placed in groups according to age.
Prizes and refreshments will be available to all.

From Tee to
the Green, Golf Clinic
- The Tee to the Green Golf Clinic is a
comprehensive youth golf program designed for
recreation agencies. Through its introductory
clinics and on-course training programs, the Tee to
the Green Clinic gives kids a complete introduction
to this game through the week long program.
Youngsters who are between the ages of 7-15 and have
never played golf are eligible to participate.
Incorporated with hands-on-instruction these clinics
provide special talks on golf course maintenance,
rules & etiquette, drug and alcohol awareness to
give the participants a complete life skills
experience.

Karate
- Train for the five selves: Self-Discipline,
Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem, Self-Respect, &
Self-Defense. Our skilled instructor from the
Okinawan Karate Academy will develop your child's
agility, strength, poise and coordination.

Messy Kids
- If you've ever wanted to play in the mud or sand
but your mom wouldn't let you, here's your chance to
show your messy side! Come prepared in old clothes
to do messy crafts.

Metro
East Tennis Camp
- The Metro East Tennis Camp begins in early June
and runs through mid July. The camp is divided
into several different age groups, registration fees
vary for each individual group. The camp
director is Dan Skaer; Head boys & girls' tennis
coach at Belleville East. The tennis
instructors are various high school coaches and
ex-college players.
Little Hitters Classes (Grades K-3) are held
on Monday & Wednesday. This is an introduction
to the game of tennis through fun games that will
improve their hand-eye coordination, racquet handing
skills and the basic tennis strokes.
The
Junior & High School Development Classes (Grades
4-7) Mondays and Wednesdays players will be
taught in small groups. They will learn all
the basic shots, how to keep score, and how to play
singles and doubles. Match play and
Competitive Games will be played on Tuesdays.
Students will also work on improving their overall
Tennis skills. Players will be grouped
according to their ability.

Pitch, Hit & Run
- Pepsi Major League Baseball PITCH, HIT & RUN
provides youngsters across the country the
opportunity to participate in an exciting baseball
skills competition. Pitch, Hit & Run is a FREE
national program that gives boys and girls, ages
7-14, the chance to showcase their baseball
abilities. PITCH, HIT & RUN is intended to
encourage youth participation and emphasize the fun
element of baseball. This program gives all
youngsters the opportunity to pick up a bat and ball
and try our national pastime, because there is no
cost for competing. Boys and girls compete
together in four age groups...
Pitching - The participants is tested
throwing strikes to a designated target.
Hitting - Allows the youngster to hit a ball
from a stationary tee for accuracy.
Running - The individuals is timed, starting
at second base, touching third then home.

Youth Leagues:
Basketball
- This program provides the 5th and 6th grade youth
the opportunity to learn to play basketball in a
structured setting. Sportsmanship is
strongly emphasized. League play starts in
October. Teams are formed through the Parks and
Recreation Department. Volunteer coaches are
sought out for this sport each year.

Volleyball
- This program provides the 5th and 6th grade girls
the opportunity to learn to play volleyball in a
structured setting. This is a team sport which
emphasizes the social, mental and physical
well-being of each child. League play starts in
September and ends in October. Teams are formed
through the Parks and Recreation Department.
Volunteer coaches are sought out for this sport each
year.

Baseball
- The Youth Baseball Program, for boys and girls
ages 5-18, is designed to introduce your child to an
organized sport at a comfortable level. Volunteer
coaches are sought out for this sport each year.
Belleville Police T-Ball
League (K - 2nd Grade) is played by hitting a
baseball from a stationary tee (no pitching).
Coaches are permitted on the field during the game
to teach catching and fielding fundamentals.
Belleville Police Robat
League (3rd & 4th Grade) introduces players to a
pitching machine, which ensures accurate pitching,
enabling players to develop hitting skills without
dodging erratic pitches. Fielding skills are
developed further in this league
Optimist
League (5th & 6th Grade) players begin playing
"Regular Rules" games. Progressing through the
Jaycee League (7th & 8th Grade) and
High School League (9th-12th
Grade) League provides a further skill building
opportunity and the means for your child to enjoy
baseball for years to come.

Fastpitch Softball
- The Belleville Parks and Recreation Department
have made an investment in the future of fast pitch
softball in the metro-east area with its growing 12,
14, 16, 18 and under fast pitch program. This
program is helping to develop the interest skills
and desire of a new generation of softball players.
These ladies will learn physical and social
skills necessary to excel individually and
ultimately ensure the continual growth of the
report. The Girls A.S.A. emphasizes fun and
provides a great exchange of fellowship,
sportsmanship, and the important feeling of
belonging. Spring games are played in May, June and
July at Laderman and Southside Park. Fall Games are
played in September, October and November at
Laderman Park.

Citizens Park. Summer leagues start in April. The
fall leagues are also available, starting in

- Anyway You Like It! We have Women's, Co-Rec. and
Recreational Volleyball leagues, indoor in the fall

- A summer concert series is enjoyed by all on

on the Square
- There's "Music in the Square", right in the heart
of Belleville, accompanied by the soothing water
sculpture and colorful lights of the Veterans'
