Collection System

The City of Belleville owns and operates a 275-mile long system of collection sewer pipes. Staff consists of a Superintendent, 3 Teamster drivers, 3 Laborers and 1 secretary.

Sanitary Sewer Lines Maintenance

The Sewer Lines Department provides maintenance and service to all City of Belleville owned sewer lines.  Many of these lines are in the street or easements in subdivisions.  The six (6) person crew cleans and repairs all City owned sewer lines.  This involves root cutting, rodder cleaning, dye testing and repairs.

The line connecting a building or home with the main sewer line is called the lateral line.  It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain, clean and repair this lateral line all the way to the City's Sewer Main.

Do yourself and the City a favor and dispose of kitchen oils, greases and fats properly.  DO NOT POUR THEM DOWN YOUR SEWER DRAIN.  Disposing of grease and oils down your sewer drain will lead to blockages in your lateral and the sewer main causing unnecessary back-ups and cleaning expenses.  Because many of our City's sanitary sewers are combined with stormwater drains, please do not dump anything (paints, gas, oil, grease, anti-freeze, grass, leaves, etc.) down stormwater inlets in the street.

Should you have a backup at your home and you think your problem is in the City's main sewer line, please call:

     (618) 233-7146 or (618) 233-8588 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
