Operations Division
Captain John Moody joined the Department in 1998. He has served as a Patrol Officer, Gang Unit Officer and Detective. He was promoted to Sergeant, Lieutenant and currently holds the rank of Captain. He served as the Chief of Investigations until the department was reorganized in June 2013. Captain Moody now commands the Operations Division which consists of the following groups or units within the department:

Investigations Group
The Investigations Group consists of one Sergeant and 13 Detectives. The majority of Detectives investigate reports taken by the Patrol Group and respond to major crimes. Juvenile Division Detectives handle crimes committed by juveniles within the City of Belleville. Crime Scene Unit Detectives process and collect evidence.

Patrol Group
The Patrol Group consists of four Lieutenants, one Master Sergeant, seven Sergeants, and thirty-six Officers. These Officers proactively patrol the assigned districts within the City of Belleville by conducting pedestrian checks and traffic stops. They handle calls for service, order maintenance complaints, complete reports, and make custodial arrests.

Special Operations Group
The Special Operations Group consists of one Captain, two Master Sergeants, six Detectives, and ten Officers. This group is home to the department’s specialized units. They are as follows: 2 Canine Officers; 2 Traffic Unit Officers; 4 Code Enforcement Officers; 4 Street Crimes Unit Detectives; and 2 School Resource Officers. Some Detectives are assigned to special task forces or multi-jurisdictional law enforcement agencies. These agencies are the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department Drug Tactical Unit (DTU).
